Using EMA Funds to Register for Mia Cake House Classes

Mia Cake House is an approved Step Up For Students provider, offering a variety of creative baking and decorating classes that qualify as educational enrichment activities. Families can use their EMA (Educational Marketplace Account) funds to register for any of our eligible classes or camps by following the simple steps below.

Misuse of funds:

To comply with Step Up rules, EMA funds can only be used for classes where the scholarship beneficiary is the participant. They cannot be used to register a sibling, parent, or guardian. Misusing scholarship funds is treated as a serious matter and can result in revocation of the scholarship.

Step 1: Visit the EMA Marketplace

Go to the EMA Marketplace and log in to your account.

Step 2: Find Mia Cake House

Search for Mia Cake House as a provider. Browse through our enrichment activities and add to your cart the class or camp you would like your child to join.

Step 3: Wait for Your Voucher Code

Once your activity is added to the cart, Mia Cake House will issue a voucher code for your selected class.
Funds are processed approximately 3 hours after they are allocated, so please allow some time to receive your code.

Step 4: Register on Our Website

After receiving your voucher code, visit classes.miacakehouse.com.
Add the desired class to your cart and proceed to checkout.
At checkout, enter your voucher code in the coupon field.
You will not be required to make any payment.

This class begins with an in-depth explanation of the different methods used by European painting schools, followed by a technical demonstration on mixing colors, organizing the palette, preparing mediums, and producing a painting from life.

Guided by Igor Naskalov, you’ll work with unique techniques to capture the beauty of a still life using mixed media materials. You’ll build color through glazing and add dimension using structural paste. If you attended the Introduction to Grisaille class, you’re welcome to bring that canvas and continue working on it — but this class also works as a standalone session.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • How to apply colors over a grisaille underpainting
  • Glazing techniques on a wet-on-dry surface
  • Using structural paste for texture
  • Color mixing for realistic tones

WHAT TO BRING — SUPPLIES LIST

  • Acrylic paint set (12+ colors)
  • Canvas or cardboard 9–12″ to 12–18″ (your grisaille canvas from a previous class, or a fresh one)
  • Soft synthetic flat and round brushes, sizes #0–8
  • Disposable palette or white plate
  • Structural paste (available at art supply stores)
  • Water-based oil paints and oil pastels

Note:  Students bring their own materials. This list is provided in advance so you can shop before class.

WHO IS IGOR NASKALOV?

Igor Naskalov is a painter and art instructor based in the United States. Originally from Russia, he has lived and worked in the US for decades — most recently in South Florida — and brings a lifetime of classical painting experience to every class he teaches.

Igor has studied and taught the techniques of the Old Masters his entire career, and his approach is built around one simple idea: anyone can learn to draw and paint. Whether you’ve never picked up a brush before or you’ve been sketching for years and want to go further, Igor meets you exactly where you are. He works with each student individually during class, adjusting his instruction to your level, your pace, and what you want to achieve.

His classes cover watercolor, acrylic, oil pastel, mixed media, and drawing — all taught in a relaxed, hands-on setting at Mia Cake House. No prior experience is needed, no special skills are required. Just bring your supplies and an open mind.
